Interview with Oli

Our summer recruitment saw Briggers boss Luke Forgione sign another exciting young prospect in Oliver McQuillan. Oli impressed during pre-season as was part of the squad that travelled to Germany, and we were pleased to get him signed up for the 2022/22 season.

We caught up with Oli to ask him a few questions as he re-joined the club for it’s Centenary Season.

Q1. Welcome to the club Oli, what made you decide to sign for the Briggers?

OM. The ambition of the gaffer made me want to sign, he kept emphasising during pre-season that we are a good enough team to build and improve on where we finished last season. I’ve enjoyed every moment from Germany in pre-season to my 1st start for the team and first win of the season at home last week against Armthorpe. All the lads and the staff were welcoming straight away and all have the mindset to be even better than last season.

Q2. You have trained and played a few games with the lads now, what are your thoughts on what you have seen so far?

OM. Very impressed, all the lads are talented which was evident otherwise they wouldn’t be here. They all show that they want to play for the club and they’re privileged to be in the position and they are all fighters and want to be in the starting 11 week in and week out and prove to the gaffer they are in the team for a reason.

Q3. To anyone that has not yet seen you play, how would you describe yourself and what can the Briggers fans look forward to seeing from you?

OM. I think the fans will see that I am willing to work hard on and off the ball, either regaining or keeping possession and freeing up space to play. I am always trying to get on the ball to run at players, take players on and being a winger I am here to score goals, create goals and be an impact player.

Q4. How do you feel your pre-season went and thoughts on the first 2 league games?

OM. I thought the pre-season was a good test of character. Being a young lad now playing in men’s football its a big change but I think I have adapted well so far. The 1st game (away at Swallownest), I just think wasn’t our day but we bounced back in our second game (home against Armthorpe) securing a good win at home. We were under the cosh a bit in periods but we had some chances that were there to be taken and I think that’s where the end product can be improved. Overall it was a really good defensive performance and a good 3 points.

Q5. What are your ambitions for the team and for yourself in the coming season?

Individually to score and create as many goals as possible. I am always wanting to play with positivity and creativity and as a team I think our collective ambition is to win as many games as possible and finish higher than we did last season, but as a team we have to want it, turn up with the right attitude and put in a performance and come away saying we couldn’t have given anymore. With the right mindset we can go on and win games and achieve what we want to this season.

Thanks to Oli for his time and welcome to the club, have a great season. UTB
